Simple Ways To Have Softer Younger Looking Skin

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By J Kelly As we age, the effects on our skin become much more apparent. The sun and our environment wreak havoc on our skin, and cause it to age and wrinkle before it’s time. Luckily there are a few things you can do to slow the progress of these effects. One of the most important things that our skin requires is water. Water is very important for the entire body, as well as the skin. Every day we are taking in pollutants from the foods that we eat, and the air that we breathe. These pollutants are removed by water through perspiration, and urination. If we don’t have enough water in our body, the pollutants are not removed efficiently, and store up in the skin. This can cause our skin to look aged, and wrinkled. Making sure to get enough water will help rid your body of the pollutants, as well as keep the skin hydrated. Well-hydrated skin is more elastic, and softer than skin that is dehydrated. With this in mind, it is not hard to understand how chronically dehydrated skin could become wrinkled, and age early in life. Just think about a dry riverbed. After the water in the riverbed dries up, the mud on the bottom becomes dry, and cracked. Your skin is much the same way, and drinking the appropriate amount of water each day can help to keep this from happening. If you ask one person what the appropriate amount of water to drink is, they may tell you 5 eight ounce glasses per day. Another may say 6 to 8 eight ounce glasses per day. The thing is that each person is different, and may require a different amount. A simple rule of thumb is to take your body weight, divide that by two, and drink that amount in ounces each day. In other words, if your body weight is 150 pounds, you would take that number, divide that by two, and you would come up with 75 pounds. The 75 pounds now becomes ounces, so you would need to drink at least 75 ounces of pure filtered water per day. If you were working in hot weather, then naturally you would want to increase that amount to replace what is lost through perspiration. Foods That Promote Healthy Skin There are a number of foods that promote healthy skin, and we will cover a few here. Several types of fruit promote healthy skin, and the types to be considered are the many different berries out there. Blackberries, Blueberries, and Strawberries are high in antioxidants, as well as many other nutrients, and antioxidants are responsible for eliminating free radicals in the human body. Free radicals are very damaging to skin cells, and eating a diet rich in antioxidants will help your body eliminate the free radicals, thereby helping your skin remain healthy. Another thing that your skin needs for good health is essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are responsible for promoting healthy cell membranes. The cell membranes act as barriers to harmful things trying to get inside the cells themselves, if you can stop these from getting inside the cells, your skin cells will be that much healthier. These fatty acids can be found in many types of food, one of which is fish. Many fish contain them, but one type in particular contains them in abundance, and that is Salmon. Eating Salmon two or three times per week will give you a good amount of these fatty acids, the health of your skin cells will improve. When your skin cells are healthy, your overall complexion will show that. Spinach, and other green leafy vegetables are also great ways to promote healthy, vibrant skin. Spinach for one has an abundance of vitamins, and the kinds of vitamins in spinach, as well as the quantity of each puts spinach into the super food category. Some of the vitamins in a one-cup serving of raw spinach, as well as their quantities are as follows. Vitamin-K-1110% daily value.Vitamin-A-294% daily value.Vitamin-C-About 30% daily value.Vitamin-B-2- About 25% daily value.Vitamin-B-6-About 23% daily value. And the list goes on and on. As you can see, spinach has a very high nutritional value to it. These vitamins, as well as many other nutrients found in spinach are very good for the health of your skin. Putting these in your diet, even a few times a week, should help to improve the health and overall appearance of your skin in a very short period of time. Finally, don’t over expose yourself to the sun! A little sun can go a long way, and everyone should invest in a high SPF sun block and wear it religiously. We need the sun to survive because it plays a vital role in metabolizing certain nutrients. However, too much sun is a major cause of wrinkles, and worse. If you are interested in achieving a great tan without the potential damage, a product which we’ve found works well are sunless tanning towels. They go on smooth, are natural, and they don’t leave you orange. Using Lotions And Creams For Healthy Skin In addition to eating a proper diet and drinking sufficient amounts of water to promote healthy skin, using good moisturizing lotions can help also. A moisturizing cream should be formulated to draw moisture to your skin, not just add oils to it. Glycerin, and Butyline Glycol are two ingredients that help attract moisture to the skin. Any moisturizing lotion that you buy should at least contain these two ingredients. Many skin care lotions claim to moisturize and promote healthy skin, but many of them merely add oils to the skin, and don’t really moisturize. Be careful of what type you use in this regard, because the object is to draw moisture to the skin, but at the same time, allow moisture in the form of perspiration, to escape. If you are clogging your pores with an oily or greasy lotion, perspiration will not be able to occur as easily, and remember that your body needs to be able to perspire in order to rid itself of pollutants. Another concern many women have, especially those that are pregnant are stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused when your skin has to stretch farther than it is capable of. When you’re skin is hydrated and elastic it can stretch much further reducing the possibilities of developing stretch marks. Again, drinking plenty of water is a must, but to get that little extra protection, you might try Everderm stretch mark cream. Many people, both men and women, have had exciting results preventing stretch marks and even reducing existing stretch marks with Everderm. I hope that you have gained a little insight into the proper care of your skin, and will begin to use this information. The skin is the largest, and one of the most important organs of the human body, and it’s proper care is essential to your good health. Take good care of it, and your body will thank you. James is a health, beauty, and wellness writer. Having great skin is a passion of his so as he comes across skin care information he habitually shares it with the world. James also likes to share findings about great skin care products. As he or those he knows uses them, he’ll often write reviews to benefit others. One product in particular that he is always talking about is Hylexin dark circle eye cream. James has suffered with allergies and sinus problems for years resulting in chronic dark circles. Hylexin has helped him stop looking like a raccoon. Lose Weight Fast - The 3 Most Important Tips To Success

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Sacha Tarkovsky There are three reasons why most people cant lose weight and this applies to about 90% of people who embark on a diet to lose weight fast. The three tips below are applicable to any diet, will help you lose weight fast and allow you to enjoy ANY Food you like. There easy to do and will make your dieting a pleasure rather than a chore. 1. Be Realistic! Healthy dieting takes time and this applies to ANY diet so dont crash diet not only is it unhealthy it will make you ill and even more importantly when you stop the pounds will pile back on even quicker. Take it in simple steps but use this diet to get the fastest results when you start and get you motivated The cabbage soup diet. It lasts only 1 week and is the fastest way to get started. It should only be used for 1 week then you can switch to any healthy diet you wish that is balanced i.e. you get all food groups 2. Starving yourself is not the answer! Your body will only lose a few pounds a week and starving yourself will not make it any quicker or depriving yourself of any of the major food groups. You need to eat 5 meals a day 3 main and two snacks and make sure you never skip breakfast to avoid hunger pangs later in the day. While you need to eat 5 meals a day you need to keep in mind portion control, how do you do that? Well lets consider say rice tuna and vegetables as a meal the size of each portion should be the size of your fist. This is a simple way to achieve portion control So try the above and make sure you eat 3 meals per day and snack on as much fruit or vegetables as you wish. 3. One Day a week do the following Follow your diet for six days a week and then on one day forget about your diet and eat whatever you want. There is logic here and its the psychological impact on your mind. If you overeat once a week you remove the one reason many diets fail, which is when choice is removed from you want it even more and dont stick with your chosen diet. By allowing yourself one day off from your diet you can say: I will stick with the diet and I can still have the foods I really want i.e I have a choice. So wont this defeat the object of dieting No it wont, and there are 3 reasons why: 1. It makes NO Long term difference You will have been eating sensibly on the other six days and one day won’t make much difference. 2. It Teaches you better eating habits By overeating and having treats you will perhaps realize that that your body has adjusted to better eating habits. This day may not be the pleasure you thought i.e. when every day was a free day, or you don’t actually want to eat as much as you thought before you came to your free day. 3. It gives a choice. By giving us choices we are more likely to stay with the diet we have chosen. Remember: To gain weight you have to eat a lot Gaining weight is a long term process and you won’t undo the good you have done on the other six days by having a free day. What you will do is give yourself the choice and make sticking with a diet less onerous. No one wants to be told they can’t have the foods they really enjoy, the free day gives you choice (the major reason most diets fail) and helps you stick with sensible eating longer term. So on your free day if you fancy a Big Mac or a pizza go ahead and dont feel guilty dieting should be a pleasure and not a chore so dont feel guilty. If you follow the three tips above you will be able to lose weight in a healthy fashion and reach your ultimate weight while enjoying any food you want. Try it and see! Enjoy Small Indoor Greenhouses

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By AnnMarier M The experience that most people have with seeing greenhouses is at a plant nursery or perhaps the zoo, where a large glass building, big enough to walk into, hot and filled with plants. But if you think that’s the limit to the size and design of greenhouses, you’re mistaken! There are greenhouses that encompass multiple acres of land, as well as small indoor greenhouses that can be operated in your basement or even on your desk at work. The uses of small indoor greenhouses can be fun as well as useful. Grow Plants All Year One of the big benefits to small indoor greenhouses is that you can enjoy your gardening hobby all year, even if it’s cold outside. The design of small indoor greenhouses usually help to capture light, or have some sort of light source to help plants grow, and by covering the area with glass or plastic, you help to capture humidity and warmth, adding to the natural warmth that the inside of your home will provide. This allows you to grow some plants, such as herbs and some vegetables, all year. Another result of this benefit is that for those who also do plenty of outdoor gardening, these can be useful tools. Small indoor greenhouses can protect transplants of your more delicate perennials when winter comes, and can be where you start seedlings in the spring, in preparation for early flowers and vegetables. By using small indoor greenhouses to help make up for some of the weeks of cold weather each year, you get a jump on having beautiful outdoor plants. A Pretty Display Small indoor greenhouses don’t have to be huge to be effective. While many will be the size of a small walk-in closet, there are designs for small indoor greenhouses that will take up about as much space as a reasonably sized aquarium, or even something small enough to house a single potted plant. One enterprising gardener even built a simple one using a child’s construction set and plastic wrap! What this means for you is that you can have a small, personalized greenhouse that can showcase small plants. Useful In School Another benefit to small indoor greenhouses is that one of the right size can be useful in schools as an educational tool. Children can learn about plants through hands-on learning, helping to cultivate plants and examining the life cycle. For some, learning by doing far exceeds the retention that book learning provides, and small indoor greenhouses can introduce kids to the wonderful world of gardening. So from a child’s education to winter cultivation, small indoor greenhouses provide ample opportunities for growing things all year long. Questions To Ask At An Interview

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Carl DiNello An interview provides an applicant the opportunity to leave a positive impression in more ways than one. We understand that it is advisable for the applicant to have an idea of what questions will be asked during the interview, so that they can mentally prepare their answers and cohesively relate it to the person conducting the interview. What we sometimes forget, is that it is also advisable to prepare your own questions to ask at the interview. Theres no way of knowing exactly what to expect on your way for an interview. There is no common format. It varies depending on the personality of the interviewer, and the requirements of the hiring company. Some interviewers are very professional and might appear cold, and distant; while others are more casual and down to earth. Either way, the applicant must find a way to build some rapport with the interviewer. It is normal for an applicant to feel as though they are being looked at under a microscope. The interviewer will initially make notice of your attire, and body language. An example being, an applicant who frequently looks at their watch will give the negative impression of being in a hurry to leave. Be aware of your body language because even the smallest gesture can be mistaken the wrong way. The interviewer will want to know more about the applicant’s background and interests. They will compare what is written on the resume, with the answers to their questions, and how well these match the requirements of the position being applied for. Near the conclusion of the interview, the interviewer will ask the applicant if they have any questions. By keeping all your questions relevant, and sincere, the applicant will have the best chance of creating a positive impression. Questions to ask, can be just as important as questions to answer. Be careful not to ask questions that have already been answered during the interview. This will only give the interviewer the impression that the applicant wasn’t paying full attention earlier. However, the applicant can ask for additional clarifications of previous topics. Should the company where the applicant is applying have a website, it is a good idea for the applicant to review the site thoroughly. Should the applicant ask questions that have been answered on the website, the interviewer may feel that the applicant did not properly prepare for the interview. Therefore, it is imperative that the applicant does sufficient research before heading to the interview. This research on the company will provide an opportunity for the applicant, when given the chance to do so, to make a positive impression by demonstrating some knowledge of the company. When preparing your questions to ask at an interview, don’t shy away from questions regarding salary and benefits. Some interviewers will bring up the details of salary and benefits, while others won’t. Many companies welcome questions about salary, benefits, and promotional opportunities. While this type of questioning may not pose a problem; the way an applicant asks the questions might. Casually mentioning these issues to the interviewer will pose no problem. As an applicant, you have every right to fully understand everything about the position for which you are applying. There really is no harm in asking. Professionalism in both interview preparation, and during the interview itself establishes a beneficial foundation for both the applicant and the interviewer. Take the time to prepare for both the questions you will be asked, as well as, the questions to ask at an interview. Skin Treatments

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Kent Pinkerton Treatments of skin diseases are varied in nature. Dermatologists are specially trained doctors who deal with skin only. The word originated from the Greek work “derma,” which means skin. Since it is the largest organ of our body, it is also prone to a lot of problems. Eternal conditions play a very big part in the cause of skin problems. For skin-related conditions, a dermatologist takes care of diagnosis and treatment, and dermasurgeons perform surgeries, such as skin cancer surgery (including Mohs’ micrographic surgery), laser surgery and photodynamic therapy (PDT). A much sought-after surgery is cosmetic surgery where procedures using botulinum toxin (’Botox’), soft tissue fillers, sclerotherapy and liposuction are undertaken. Cosmetic surgery is advised where the skin has been badly affected by burns and where there are birth defects. In other cases it is used for aesthetic purposes - a big market considering how conscious we are of our physical appearance. The diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases in children is performed by pediatric dermatologists. The diagnosis and management of skin diseases due to an altered immune system, including blistering (bullous) diseases, is taken care of by immunodermatologists. Sexually transmitted diseases are treated by the subspecialty, venereology, and the superficial venous system is dealt with by phlebology. Both these categories come under the expertise of dermatologists. Tumors, whether benign or malignant, also come under their purview. They use various techniques like the scalpel, chemo, electro, cyro surgery, lasers, topical and injection immunotherapy, photodynamic treatments and chemotherapy. Research is an ongoing process and with proper diagnosis there are very few skin problems that cannot be treated. Doctors all over the world believe that prevention is better than the cure and ensure that a patient in their care is cured with minimum pain and stress. Skin provides detailed information on Skin, Skin Care, Skin Rashes, Skin Treatments and more. Skin is affiliated with Laser Stretch Marks Removal. How To Improve Your Study Habits and Remember Better

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Royane Real If youre a student attending classes, you have probably experienced many moments when it was hard to make yourself settle down and study, even when an important exam was coming up. If youre like most students, you put off studying until the very last minute. The night before the exam, youll stay up all night cramming, getting little or no sleep. In the morning, youll drag yourself out of bed, psych yourself up with lots of coffee and some cigarettes, and go into the exam feeling exhausted, drained and jittery all at the same time. Youll find it hard to focus or think, and youll be cursing yourself for not starting to study sooner. And not surprisingly, unless youre blessed with natural brilliance, or you happen to know the subject matter extremely well, youll probably do terribly on the test. If this is your typical method of studying, you already know it doesnt work. Every time you go through this ritual, you tell yourself that youre going to smarten up the next time you face a big exam. Next time youll start to study weeks in advance, you say. But instead, you keep repeating this crazy pattern. Why does this keep happening? And what should you be doing instead if you want to get better marks? A big problem for most people, especially those who are young students, is that life gets in the way. If youre a student, you probably have a part time job, and like most young people, you also want to have a social life. Studying can seem very boring compared to all the exciting temptations just outside your door. Or the games on your computer. Even watching old reruns of Sesame Street can seem more interesting than the biology text your teacher is expecting you to master! One reason we often dont start studying until the last possible minute is that we have misjudged how long it will actually take us to absorb and understand the material. If your mid-term is still six weeks away, that might seem like plenty of time left before you need to get around to studying. You might find however, that the subject matter is a lot harder to understand than you thought it would be, and all of a sudden theres no time left to ask someone to explain it to you. Another reason we often put off starting to study is that we are too overwhelmed with how big the project actually seems to be. Somehow we convince ourselves that putting off a tough study project can be the best way to avoid feeling overwhelmed by it. When we are faced with a study project that seems exceptionally difficult and overwhelming, it can be to maintain a high level of interest and motivation for the duration of the learning process. If you have been guilty of all these bad study habits, its not too late to learn some other habits that will work better for you. First, remind yourself why you want to do better in your studies. Maybe you need a good mark to get into a good college. Maybe you want a chance at a career that will pay you well. Always keep your end goal in mind. You can put little cards up around your room with inspirational messages, and attractive photographs that will remind you why you want to do well in school. If you feel very overwhelmed, you can improve your motivation and your performance by breaking up the project into smaller sections, or chunks. Each time you accomplish one little bit successfully, give yourself a meaningful reward. If you have a deadline looming, decide how much of the project you need to tackle at one time. Lets say you have six weeks to master the content of a difficult biology text. Looking through the book you realize that if you study one chapter each night, you can get through the book in 28 days, leaving two weeks in which you can again review the material. With this knowledge you can pace yourself. You know what your assignment is. You know how much you need to read every night. Concentrate on the immediate task at hand. You dont need to feel overwhelmed by the entire book at one time. Next, work out a system of rewards for yourself. Give yourself a series of small rewards each time you master one chapter, and a larger reward for completing the entire book. For rewards to work they must be immediate, and personally meaningful to you. There is no point in rewarding yourself with a new fishing rod if you hate fishing. Rewards dont need to be material objects if there is something else that would really motivate and inspire you. How about attending a special concert, or taking a special trip? You decide. Get creative and think of something that will spur you to take action. Its very important that the reward take place soon after the work has been accomplished. This creates a sense of positive reinforcement. Give yourself a small reward every time you finish a small part of the job, and a bigger reward when the project is completed. If there is too long a gap between the activity and the reward, it will not have the effect of reinforcing the desired activity. Besides motivating yourself with a series of external rewards, learn to motivate yourself internally. Tell yourself youre a good learner. Tell yourself you enjoy learning. Tell yourself you enjoy giving your brain a good work out. Congratulate yourself for your efforts. Tell yourself you love acquiring new knowledge, and let yourself feel a joy in learning. Be proud of yourself for the work you do to gain more knowledge. For information to sink into your brain and be accessible to you, you need to review it several times, and your brain needs to sleep properly for the memories to be encoded in your neurons. You need to reduce your mental stress. Your brain needs good nutrition and it needs to be in a peaceful, confident state. Drugs and alcohol dont help the process of learning. Write out what you are learning in your own words, and find a learning buddy. Practice explaining to someone else what you have learned. This will increase the likelihood that your brain will remember it. If you start to cram the night before, you are putting your brain at a big disadvantage. Youre increasing your physical and mental stress, and youre not giving yourself time to review the material several times. By cutting back on your sleep, youre not giving your brain a chance to put the information youve been studying into the hard drive storage of your brain. By starting your studies early, and reviewing what youve learned, you have a much better chance of remembering and understanding what you need to know when you face a big exam. Do You Know the Health Benefits of Garlic?

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Ashi Jas General Description Garlic belongs to the same family as the onion. Both these herbs have been given special importance in Ayurveda due to their immense curative properties. The first recorded incidence of garlic as a medicinal herb dates as back as 4500 B.C. when the pyramid builders in Egypt were made to eat garlic cloves everyday for building their health. It has also been recommended by Hippocrates, who is regarded as the Father of Medicine. Garlic is a biennial herb, but it is generally cultivated as an annual herb for convenience. Morphologically, it is a short herb with fibrous roots, a condensed stem and flattened leaves. The separate cloves of the garlic are enclosed together to form a single bulb. There could be anywhere between six and thirty-five cloves in one bulb of garlic. It is called as lahsuna in the Indian language and its binomial name is Allium sativum. It contains all the vitamins necessary in the human diet, such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin (B complex vitamins) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Garlic contains minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and iron. It also contains iodine, sulfur and chlorine in trace amounts. Besides all these, garlic contains allicin, allisatin I and allisatin II, all of which have been identified to be agents helpful in bringing down high blood pressure. Properties Garlic is known for the following curative properties:- (i) Garlic contains antiseptic properties. Hence it is used in preventing infections. (ii) Garlic is hypotensive, i.e. it has capacity to bring down blood pressure. (iii) Garlic is a stimulant for appetite. (iv) Due to its rich vitamin and mineral content, garlic is very good for the hair. (v) Garlic increases the inner body strength and vitality. (vi) Garlic can reduce cholesterol accumulated in the arteries. That explains its widespread use in the treatment of heart problems. (vii) The strong juices of the garlic dissolve the mucus content in the respiratory tract. (viii) Garlic increases perspiration, which helps in the removal of the toxins from the sweat pores. (ix) Garlic is anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic in nature. (x) Garlic has notable aphrodisiacal properties. It is used in the treatment of many sexual problems. Uses Garlic is almost worshipped in Ayurvedic medicine since it is a single treatment for a wide variety of diseases. The following are the diseases in which garlic proves to be very beneficial. (i) Acne Garlic is used in the treatment of acne. If the pimples are rubbed with a cut clove of garlic several times a day, then they will disappear without leaving a scar behind. Garlic must also be included in the diet since it is a blood-purifier and can treat acne from within. (ii) Asthma Garlic is a sure remedy for asthma patients. Each night before retiring to bed, asthmatic patients must drink a glassful of milk in which three cloves of garlic have been boiled. Another remedy is very popular in making asthmatic attacks less severe. It is as follows: Peel a clove of garlic, crush it and boil it in 120 milliliters of pure malt vinegar. Cool it, then strain it and add an equal quantity of honey in it. Preserve this syrup in a clean bottle. Take one or two teaspoons of this syrup with a decoction of fenugreek twice each day, after darkness sets in. (iii) Digestive Problems Garlic is unanimously considered by all Ayurvedic doctors to be the best herb in the treatment of digestive problems. Daily consumption of garlic in the food helps in the proper movement of the intestines, which helps in digestion. Due to its antiseptic properties, garlic is also good remedy for preventing the inflammations of the gastric canal. Garlic aids in the treatment of colitis, dysentery and diarrhea. (iv) Heart Problems Garlic has only recently been proven in the west to be a suitable remedy for heart ailments. It can disintegrate the cholesterol that collects in the arteries, and hence treat the problem of atherosclerosis. It is clinically proven that the chances of a heart attack are significantly lowered if a person who has suffered a minor heart attack begins taking three cloves of garlic on a daily basis. (v) High Blood Pressure Due to the rich chemicals present in it, garlic is taken as an effective treatment for high blood pressure. Garlic reduces the spasms of the arteries and reduces the pressure. In addition, it also modifies the heart rhythm and dizziness, shortness of breath and flatulence. (vi) Parasites Garlic is an excellent worm expeller. It is also used in treating bacterial infections in the alimentary canal. The best thing about using garlic as a remedy for bacterial parasites is that it kills the harmful bacteria without harming the useful ones. (vii) Pneumonia A decoction of garlic is boiled in milk. This is prepared by mixing one gram of garlic in 250 milliliters of milk and one liter of water. All this is boiled till it reduces to one-fourth of the amount. This is to be taken thrice a day. This is a wonderful remedy for pneumonia. (viii) Ringworm Garlic is rubbed over ringworm. This burns out the infection and the skin falls off, leaving healed skin behind. (ix) Rheumatism Garlic is used in rheumatism treatment due to its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to rheumatism, garlic is also used for the treatment of lumbago and arthritis. (x) Sexual Problems Garlic has aphrodisiac properties. It is used to enhance libido in men and women. It is used as a sex rejuvenator, i.e. it can improve sexual activity that has been damaged due to accident or disease. It is important for people who overindulge in sex to protect them from nervous exhaustion. (xi) Tuberculosis Garlic is used for tuberculosis in the form of a decoction boiled in milk. (xii) Whooping Cough In cases of whooping cough, syrup of garlic is given in doses of five drops sweetened with some sugar. This is given thrice a day, and the dosage must be increased if the problem becomes more violent. (xiii) Wounds Due to its antiseptic properties, garlic can be effectively used in the treatment of wounds and ulcers. A good antiseptic lotion can be prepared for washing wounds by dissolving one part of garlic juice in three parts of distilled water. When the wound is washed with this lotion, there is marked improvement in a very short time. This also relieves the pain that is associated with wounds due to damage to the nerves. Special Ayurvedic Preparations Mostly garlic is eaten raw, and is prescribed to be an integral part of the diet. Precautions Garlic is a component of the main Indian diet, and there are no problems associated with its intake. Up to six cloves of garlic can be taken per day without any side-effects. The only problem with garlic is that it gives a bad taste in the mouth and pungent breath due to its sulfur content. Tanning Bed Bulbs are the Key to an Even Tan

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Larry Scott Many tanning bed owners may not realize that tanning bed bulbs have a shelf life, and the more hours they clock under the lights, the less time-efficient their tanning sessions may become. This means spending more time in a tanning bed to keep the same great tan as before. Of course, when juggling a career, family, and social obligations, making time for tanning comes at a premium, even if you have a bed at home and don’t need to schedule around a tanning salon’s other clients. This means it is important to change the bulbs at regular intervals most people find that every 500 hours is optimal even though many bulbs may actually last 800 2,000 hours. Equally important to changing bulbs at regular intervals is to change all the bulbs at the same time. This is because the new bulb will burn brighter than the other bulbs and you may find it leaves a strip of skin tanned darker or burned. Remember, the older the tanning bed bulb is, the less efficient it is, so when you replace it, you will want to spend less time in the bed for the first several hours. Increase your tanning sessions as your bulbs age to maintain the same golden tan year round. Don’t let the cost of replacing tanning bed lamps keep you from changing them either. Look at it this way. If a full set of lights cost you $400, you change them every 500 hours, and you normally tan for 20 minutes per session, your average bulb cost is less than $.30 per tan, as opposed to an average of $5 to $10 per visit at your local salon. Even after factoring in the cost of the bed and electricity used per tanning session, residential tanning beds are a bargain! Maximize your tanning experience by replacing the tanning bed bulbs at regular intervals to optimize your tan per session. The cost is minimal compared to the savings gained by properly maintaining your tanning bed, and you will be rewarded with an amazing tan for months to come. End Your Love Affair With Food!

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Julia Havey Do you remember your first love? Have you ever taken one look at a person and known it was love? Are you currently in love? Do you love romantic movies, love songs and romance novels? Do you love dogs, cats or other pets? Do you love chocolate, pasta or other foods? Do you see a difference between all of these things that we say we “love”? So often a reader will tell me that they love food, or that they love a certain food. I try to explain to them that love should be reserved for our family, our pets and ourselves. When pressed, the person will nearly always recant and say, “Well, I dont love it, but I really like it.” I think when we say we love a certain food, it gives that food a lot of control over us. Think about it: You love your parents, your spouse, your friends and your children, right? And, therefore, you feel a certain responsibility toward them. You would never ignore them, shut them out of your life or purposely decide never to see them again, would you? Well, in the case of the unhealthy foods that we believe we love, I think we should take a different approach. I think they should be cast aside, banned and sent to the trash. Why? The problem with the unhealthy foods that we love, or our vice foods as I like to call them, is that it is a case of love at first bite. That very first bite does us in, and we are hooked. We become prisoners of love and true goners. If you LOVE chocolate and take that very first bite, are you able to put it down and not finish the candy bar or the box? If you LOVE fried chicken, do you really eat just ONE piece, or do you have many? What about pizza, another great love of our lives. Have you ever had one piece and then broken up with the remaining cheesy, gooey and tempting pieces left in the box? Or, how about potato chips? Lays potato tells us that no one can eat just one for a reason. No one can! So you see, it is really the first bite of the unhealthy food item that is the problem. If you can just say NO to the first bite, then you don’t have the internal struggle of when to stop having more bites. Many people can relate to the story of one of my readers, she lived a morbidly obese lifestyle in a morbidly obese body. Ice cream was truly her lover. She had a horrible marriage and was very lonely, so night after night, she curled up on the sofa with her gallon and fell in love — bite after bite. The ice cream filled a void that nothing else seemed to fill. But, the problem was that she also trying to diet. She was constantly trying to lose weight, going on diet after diet, but still continuing the affair with her lover: Espresso and Cream (Light) Baskin-Robbins ice cream. To her and so many others, the love of food was an obsession. She was embarrassed that she even bounced checks to buy her fix. Like with any unhealthy addiction we have in life, it had to stop. She swore off ice cream, her vice, in January of 1995. It has now been almost 12 years, and I am proud to say that she has not had ONE bite of ice cream, not ONE, since the very day that she decided to stop. It is an interesting coincidence that by Christmas of that year, she was also down about 100 pounds. You see, we all need replace our love of food with a new love: Self-Love! Love of self is the only kind of love that will help YOU to realize your dreams and goals. So, do you really love food, or is it time to look a bit deeper for a new love? “Banking Calories”: Eat Less Now To Pig Out Later?

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Tom Venuto Suppose youre on a diet and you have a banquet or a holiday party coming up. Youre expecting a big meal to be served for dinner, and there will be open bar with lots and lots of party snacks. Youre not sure if there will be any healthy food there, but you are sure that youre going to be in a festive, partying mood! What should you do? Should you cut back on your food earlier in the day to make room for the big feast? What Ive just described is commonly known as “banking calories,” which is analogous to saving calories like money because you’re going to consume more later, and its a very common practice among dieters. If youre really serious about your diet and fitness goals however, then the answer is no, you should NOT bank calories! Here’s why and here’s what you should do instead: First of all, if you’re being really honest with yourself, you have to agree that there’s almost always something healthy to eat at any gathering. You know those tables you see at holiday parties that are covered with yards of chips, dips, pretzels, cookies, salami, candies, cheese, punch, liquor, and a seemingly endless assortment of other goodies? Well, did you also notice that there’s usually a tray full of carrot sticks, cauliflower, celery, fruit, turkey breast and other healthy snacks too? No matter where you are, you always have options, so make the best choice you can based on whatever your options are. If nothing else, you can choose to eat a small portion of “party foods” rather than a huge portion. If you skip meals or eat less earlier in the day to bank calories for a big feast at night, you are thinking only in terms of calories, but yore depriving yourself of the valuable nutrition you need all day long in terms of protein (amino acids), carbohydrates, essential fats, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that come from healthy food, as well as the small frequent meals required to stoke the furnace of your metabolism. Not only that, but eating less early in the day in anticipation for overeating later is more likely to increase your appetite, causing you to binge or eat much more than you thought you would at night when the banquet does arrive. Eating healthy food earlier in the day is likely to fill you up and you’ll be less likely to overeat in the evening. High fiber foods, healthy fats and especially lean protein, tend to suppress your appetite the most. I dont like the concept of “banking calories.” Your body just doesn’t work that way - it tends to seek equilibrium by adjusting your appetite to the point where you consume the same total amount of calories in the end anyway. Even if it worked the way you wanted it to, why would you eat less (starve) in an attempt to burn more fat, then overeat (binge) and put the fat right back on? Why allow yourself to put on fat in the first place? A starving and bingeing pattern will almost certainly cause more damage than an occasional oversize meal. Some dieticians might even say that this kind of behavior borders on disordered eating. A better approach is to stay on your regular menu of healthy foods and small meals through the entire day - business as usual - and then go ahead and treat yourself to a “cheat meal,” but sure to keep your portions small. It should be a big relief to know that on special occasions, whether it’s a party, restaurant meal, banquet or holiday dinner, you can eat whatever you want with little or no ill effect on body composition, as long as you respect the law of calorie balance. However, you CANNOT starve and binge and expect not to reap negative consequences. To burn fat and be healthy, you don’t have to be a “party pooper” or completely deny yourself of foods you enjoy, but you do need to have the discipline to stick with your regular meal plan most of the time and control your portion sizes all of the time.
