Wood Turning - Keeping the Wood Healthy

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Darrell Feltmate Wood starts as a living material and should really be treated as such once it gets to the shop. We are becoming continually aware of the need for ecological soundness in our life practices and wood turning is no different. From its very roots, wood turning is an ecologically sound practice. Most of the wood used by turners comes from waste wood. While more and more communities are becoming better able to handle waste wood and to see it being moved into usable areas such as heat and energy production or the development of alternative building materials, this is confined generally to the waste from industrial applications of wood products or large scale harvesting. Wood turners are able to use wood as a log or “in the round” as opposed to cabinet makers or luthiers for example. Thus what might be considered waste by some is considered to be working capitol for a turner. Much of this wood may come from local arborists and tree removal companies and thus saves the company a tipping fee at the landfill and saves landfill volume as well. In the same regard is wood that comes as a result of dead fall from storms and such. Still more wood may be rescued from the firewood suppliers. Once the wood is obtained it is necessary to keep it well until time to turn it is available. Unfortunately, this is the area of expertise which many turners lack. The first tool for keeping wood is oddly enough the chain saw. Green wood is heavy with all the water in it and it needs to be cut into reasonably manageable chunks. Water is the main problem with preserving wood to use later. As the water leaves it builds stress in the wood because wood is not uniform and the water leaves different areas at different speeds leaving some areas wetter than others and cracks will develop as the wood tries to stabilize. One simple expedient if the wood has arrived in long lengths, say eight feet or more each, is to leave it alone. The ends will crack about four inches deep for most logs. These ends may be cut back with the chain saw and the next section of log used. A better solution for most turners is to have the wood in shorter lengths. They are much easier to store and to move around as necessary. In this case the ends of the log need to be treated as the water loss is much faster at the ends than it is from the sides. The ends are painted with something that does not stop the wood from losing water but rather evens out the water loss and thus evens out the tensions in the drying wood. One such product is Anchorseal from UCCoatings company. Developed for the purpose of aiding high end hardwood lumber companies in maintaining good stocks of prime lumber which could be lost to degrade in drying, it turns out to be just what the wood turner needs. Painting the ends of the logs with Anchorseal helps greatly in preventing checking and making sure the wood gets to the lathe in fine shape. Darrell Feltmate is a juried wood turner whose web site, http://aroundthewoods.com , contains detailed information about wood turning for the novice or experienced turner as well as a collection of turnings for your viewing pleasure. Benefits of Meal Planning

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Brandi Rhoades Meal planning is something that many people believe they do not have time to do, but it has a number of benefits for your family. First, it saves you time. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, most families could use more hours in the day. Failing to plan your meals means that you will end up going to the store more often because you will not have what you need at home to cook each meal. You also will end up going out to eat more often because you do not feel like cooking or because it is too much of a hassle to cook from the ingredients you have on hand. You also will see a lower grocery bill if you begin to plan out your meals. While you may be shocked initially over the high cost of the bill, it will be because you are buying for a minimum of one week at a time. Every time you go into the grocery store you are tempted to purchase items not on your list. By cutting back on the number of times you go to the store, you will reduce those needless purchases. You also will find that you are better prepared when you go to the store, so you will not pick up eggs because you arent sure if you have any. You wont buy what you dont need because you will have a list with you to control your urge to splurge. Meal planning also means that you and your family will be healthier. Planning meals will help you to think about what you are putting into your body. If you shop daily on the way home from work, you are tired and hungry. The thought of cooking something from scratch is daunting. Besides that, you would have to be sure you got everything. It is much easier to get something that is ready-to-cook with only water or just popping it into the oven. Those meals tend to be high in sodium, fat, and carbohydrates, and they are low in vitamins and minerals. By planning in advance, you will have healthier options available and will have the energy to cook them because you are skipping the trip to the grocery store. Give meal planning a try. You will find that it saves you so much in time and money that its worth the little effort it requires on a weekly basis to plan out your meals. Once you start meal-planning, youll never go back to shopping haphazardly again. You’re free to reprint this article, but you must include it in its entirety. Lose Weight Permanently - No. 4 - Focus On A Healthier Lifestlye

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Eric Hartwell Losing weight is not something that will just happen. You have to MAKE it happen. You may not like the thought of focusing on your health but it will help you in the long run. It takes concentration on your part especially in the first few months when you are new to the regimen and the rigor of a healthier lifestyle. We all have ideas of what makes us healthy. Some of us like to think we are healthy even when we are not. That is understandable it takes effort to be healthy. It doesnt just happen to us. You have to go out and do things to make it real. What you eat, how you exercise and how you live your life are all important and they need careful planning. Being healthy for a few months is easy it gives you a boost. But keeping that going for the long term needs work. So focus on being healthy. Having the motivation to be thin puts too much pressure on outward appearance. It means you are doing it for the wrong reasons (although it is great to look good). The focus should be placed towards a healthy style of living. Think about food that is healthy for your body, not which foods will add on pounds. Think about how much exercise you will do on a particular day not on whether you can be bothered to do any at all. Soon you will be able to introduce healthy life style maintenance changes throughout every day. That will get, and keep you, fat free. The Little Things DO Make A Big Difference

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Emily Tanner When decorating favour boxes, reception tables, organza bags, bomboniere nets, Wedding cakes and floral arrangements, the decoration has the make-or-break factor. So, when deciding how to ‘finish off’ wedding accessories, consider your choice of feathers, flowers, ribbons and jewels very carefully. Once the bridal party’s outfits have been finalised and the venue confirmed, you are on the way to choosing what theme your wedding will have. Then - and only then - can you start putting the finishing touches together. So many brides make that fatal mistake of buying metres of ribbon or pearl cluster jewels only to realise that they have to base the entire wedding around that! Of course, in some cases it can work. Some [lucky] brides, see a shocking pink marabou feather and a silver fabric heart and know that everything else will have to work round that. However, this is only the case in a minority of weddings, so ideally you should have the basics in place first before you add the detail. If you are having a fairty tale/princess wedding, then the chances are your dress will be strapless and meringue-like. No doubt your handsome groom will be attired in a light coloured morning suit, possibly with a tall hat? Some of your bridesmaids will be children and dressed in pretty outfits. Is this ringing any bells with you? If so then you will probably be looking at lots of flowers and hearts to add details to your wedding. Go for pinks, silvers and lilacs when looking for table decorations. Get your cake decorator to use feathers on your cake and ensure these appear in any floral decorations [including bouquets]. Why not have young bridesmaids with silver jewels in their hair, pink feathers and lilac flowers - perhaps all woven together on an aliceband. Perhaps you are a simple bride and want a wedding that’s plain yet elegant? Maybe you’ll be wearing a non-frilly gown, strappy sandals and a going for a hair-down style? Strike any chords? If so, then decorations on your favour boxes, tables, cake and floral arrangements need to be elegant yet stylish. Why not go for a diamante or pearl feel? Arrange flowers with pearl or diamante stamens and ensure cake jewels are eye-catching. Scatter the tables with white feathers intermingled with silver organza ribbon. Choose white favour boxes finished with white feathers and silver jewel sprays. You and your wedding will ooze class and sheer sophistication! So many people think that the little things do not matter, but they really do. Choose carefully when selecting ribbons, favours, jewels, flowers and feathers. And, be clear of your theme first as it’s the decorative accessories that tie everything together [or not, in some cases]. Why You Never Have To Pay Retail Prices For Anything - Ever Again

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Tukshad Engineer I step into my local mall, and into a leading top brand clothes store. I see a jumper I like and while feeling the soft material casually lift up the price tag - and I almost feint with disbelief. How much??? That’s more than I make in 2 days! I quickly stop caressing the fabric and head toward Big Als Unbranded Clothes Discount Centre for a sweater within my budget range (which unfortunately will no doubt look as if it were knitted by my 5 year old Niece.) Sounds familiar? Well it really need not be this way. It actually amazes me how many people do not use wholesalers and government auctions to save money on just about anything they could ever wish to purchase. It’s possible to get regular discounts of 50% and more on top brand items just by knowing WHERE to shop. Let us begin by looking at Government Auctions. While this article will focus on the USA and UK it’s worth noting that government auctions are held in many other countries too. A government auction is held to auction off various items (often at rock bottom prices) that the government has legal ownership of. The type of items auctioned by various government agencies include vehicles, electronics, real estate, computers, jewellery and a lot more. In the UK, the types of government agencies that will offer up bargain goods and properties include the police and C&E - there are also private liquidation’s due to corporate bankruptcies. Many hundreds of auctions are held yearly and there are scores of bargains to be had in most of them. It’s not unusual to pickup a brand new widescreen TV at 30 or top spec PCs and laptops from a mere 200. It’s possible to learn more here: http://www.global-ebooks.com/UKGovAuctions.htm In the USA there are also similar bargains to be had, and the government agencies often auction off cheap land and properties in addition to the usual range of electronics, vehicles and household goods. Just some of the bargains in recent times include assorted jewellery $600 in value being sold for just $20 and an actual house being sold at 50% below its market value. More information on government auctions in the USA is available here: http://www.global-ebooks.com/US_GOVERNMENT_AUCTIONS.htm So are there any catches? Surely not anyone can just turn up and help themselves to all the bargains that they can carry home? Well actually, that’s just the way it is. Anyone can attend, you just need to know where and these auctions take place. Not a lot of people realise it, but it’s also possible to pick up massive wholesale bargains, just by ordering goods from a good wholesaler. There is a lot of apprehension with a lot of people when it comes to buying from wholesalers - many people are afraid that they will get turned away, that wholesalers will only sell to huge retail stores with many thousands of dollars to spend. While some wholesalers do have minimum orders, many do not at all and will gladly accept orders from you and me. You can check out some really good wholesalers here: UK http://www.global-ebooks.com/UKWHOLESALEPAGES.htm USA http://www.global-ebooks.com/US_WHOLESALE_PAGES.htm So there you have it - a way to save a lot of money on just about anything that you want to buy. The best thing is that you can just as easily use this information to actually make money. How? eBay is the worlds biggest auction site by far, enjoying billions of page impressions per month (and this number is growing!). People will buy and sell almost anything on eBay, and some sellers have actually made selling on eBay their full time jobs. Many of them use the government and wholesale sources to buy stock cheap before reselling on eBay at good profit margins. Whether you’re looking to save money or make money on top brand goods, wholesalers and government auctions are the way forward. Find out a list of auctions and wholesalers that you can visit and then just DO IT! You may well be pleasantly surprised with what you come home with. Earn Your MBA Degree Online

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By Mike Jerry Earning an MBA degree online is becoming easier and easier. Many colleges are offering partial and full on-line programs for people to earn their graduate school degrees. In the past people who wanted to earn an MBA had to stop working or switch to part-time employment in order to attend campus classes. But today earning an MBA has become much more convenient. On and Off Campus Campus programs have started expanding and offering degrees online. Schools that used to just offer on-campus programs are seeing the need for an expanded degree program. With on-line courses the colleges can deliver low cost, high quality education, to a wider student base. School courses that are delivered in an on-line setting are just as educational as the on-campus classes. Many courses offer tele-class lessons or other virtual classroom venues. These school courses are usually packed to capacity because they have become so popular. Each course is going to offer a unique way of learning for the students that take the class. Some courses will be easier to work through an on-line program than other courses will. Also, some students learn differently and will not be able to learn through an on-line course. Each student needs to evaluate their ability to stick with an on-line degree program before paying tuition fees. New Types of Colleges There are also colleges that mainly cater to the on-line student. This type of school may offer some community courses but most of their students take courses on-line. These types of schools offer undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degree programs to their students. Some programs can be completed entirely online, while other programs may require some occasional on-campus class work. Some popular degrees that are offered include bachelors of Education, psychology, business, education, and MBA graduate degrees. Ten years ago the only way to earn an MBA was to try to squeeze classes in during the day or work all day and take night classes. But even then there were not very many programs that were able to accommodate working adults. How They Compare On-line college programs can be offered inexpensively compared to regular college tuition because the teacher can administer the course right from their desk. Even though the tuition is less expensive than a four-year university some low-income families may still not be able to afford to attend college…even if it is an online program. To help make these types of programs an inexpensive alternative, most on-line universities offer the same federal student loans that other universities offer. These federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans and grants make an affordable online college degree a possibility for almost any family. Online programs are definitely worth looking into if you are considering going back to school to get your degree. They are convenient and offer you the ability to earn your MBA while staying at your current job. Most programs are offered on a continuous basis which makes them even more convenient to enroll in. Pet Trusts - Do You Have One For Your Pets?

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Michael Pancheri It is no secret that people get excited about their pets. And, that feeling does not go away when it comes time to doing some estate planning for the family - because pets are part of the family too! Unfortunately, until recently, there just wasnt a whole lot that could be done for pets. In most cases, a loving family member would just take over after the owners death. That worked in many cases, but not always. In fact, in far too many cases there were no loving family members willing or able to step up to the plate and take on that responsibility. The end result - the pets ended up on the street or in local animal shelters. Many times, an owner would sweeten the offer by leaving some money for the pet’s care under his or her will. However, since there was no legal obligation to use the money for the pets, you can guess what happened. In many cases, the family member or friend took the money and put the pet in the shelter. One way that pet owners tried to solve the problem was to place money in trust for the care of the pet, with the family member or friend acting as the trustee. While this technique looked official, there was a real problem with it - pets are not people, and the law only recognized trusts when people were the beneficiaries. The legal effect of these so-called honorary trusts was not very satisfactory. Since no one was able to enforce these trusts (i.e., the pets couldn’t defend themselves), the trustees were free to do as they pleased. If a trustee was also named as the beneficiary of any money left over after the pets died, guess what happened. The Trustee took the money - and put the pets in the shelter. In 1991, the Uniform Probate Code was adopted by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (ULC). Section 2-907 of that Uniform Probate Code provided that a pet trust could be enforced if an individual was designated for that purpose in the trust instrument or if an individual was so appointed for that purpose by the court. In 2000, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws adopted the Uniform Trust Code, Section 408 of which authorizes pet trusts under a provision very similar to the Uniform Probate Code. The breakthrough with these two pieces of model legislation was that, for the first time, there was legal authority for the existence of a pet trust and there was a mechanism to enforce the provisions of the trust if the trustee did not carry them out as instructed. In other words, the trustee could now be forced to actually use the money for the care and protection of the pets! While this was great news for pet owners, these two pieces of model legislation are not governing law. Instead, they are simply models that may be considered for legislative enactment, in one form or another, by each of the 50 states. The intent, of course, is that all 50 states will adopt the model legislation so that all states will have identical laws. As of this date, close to half of the states and the District of Columbia have enacted legislation authorizing pet trusts, based in whole or in part on the Uniform Probate Code and the Uniform Trust Code, and at least 6 states have similar legislation pending. If you happen to live in any of the states that have authorized pet trusts, you may want to expand your estate planning horizons to include a provision for your pets. Thats what more and more people are doing now that there is legal authority for pet trusts. Attorney Michael P. Pancheri is the founder and CEO of the Living Trust Network. Don’t Get Too Fat And Happy

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Chris Callegari This title today has multiple meanings, but Im only going to focus on two of them (actually, just mainly one of them). The first meaning (and the one I wont spend a lot of time on) is the literal meaning of my title. Basically, stop acting fat and happy just because you can throw down a six-pack of donuts with a 72 ounce carbonated beverage. That wont get you anywhere. Actually, it will get you somewhere, if you enjoy making a trip to your local hospital. Hey, its your call. The other meaning that I will talk about in depth is the one that stares far too many people in the face on a daily basis. What is it? Let me explain Someone decides to make a change, eat better, exercise (the right way), focuses on positive thinking phrases to say to oneself. Theyre doing great. They feel great. They look great. Then. They allow themselves a cheat day. On this day, Chris, they say to me I can eat and do whatever I want What do you think that entails, guys and gals? Any guesses?Maybesplurging on food and drink. Multiple times over. You have to enjoy your cheat day, right? Wrong. This is what Im talking about here. Dont get too excited that you allow yourself to binge on food and drink. Now, am I saying you have to eat broccoli and drink water all day, every day? Of course not. You have to find balance (leaning toward the side of healthiness, of course). Stay with me here. You need to find the balance between being proud of yourself, and not being TOO proud of yourself. Are you with me here? Good. Remember, as Ive said many times before, you will be the one who ultimately is responsible for your fitness level. Not Mom. Not Dad. Or sister, brother, spouse, friend, or even your great great uncle. You get the picture. Should you be happy you are making progress. Of course! Not only that, you should be ecstatic! Making progress is something most people dont even try to do. They are quitters. You, my friend, are not a quitter. On the other hand, dont get soooo fired up, that you decide you can let it all hang out, and go crazy on the buffet table. There is absolutely no need for that. Remember, this is a lifestyle change. Not a 1 week or 1 month change. You want this change forever. You want constant improvement. You need constant improvement. This will push you to greater heights, I promise. Its about that time..so, until next time, be proud of your progress, but never, ever stop striving for your goals. Just because youre part of the way there, doesnt mean its time to throw in the towelon the contrary, thats when the real successful people step up and take it one notch further. Take it one notch further, right now. Why Should You Consider Designing Your Wedding Rings?

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Danah Yousuf Congratulations! If you are reading this article then chances are you have come to a stage in your relationship that you and your significant other are considering shopping for wedding rings or bands. I have not known one single person who has spent less then weeks thinking, deciding and choosing their wedding rings. It can be an exhilarating, exciting and and the same time frustrating experience. Its common to either not find what you are looking for or are just too expensive. Simple answer to this predicament is to design your wedding rings. And here is what you can expect to gain if you decide to do your own designing: - Affordability: This is the best and most important factor. You can significantly reduce the cost of the rings. One reason ready-made rings are so expensive is because of the designing expenses. So if you create your own, you dont have to bear the burden of an expensive designer label bill. - Uniqueness: There are not many better ways to symbolize your love then having your own unique wedding rings, and trust me, people will compliment on your rings wherever you go. - Personalized: By designing your own, you can ensure that it suits your tastes and you can include secret messages or symbols to each other. - Opportunity to exhibit your creativity: And last but not least - one more reason why people prefer designing their wedding rings to buying ready-made ones is the chance to bring into play originality and creativity in embodying mutual love. Danah Yousuf is a freelance writer and a full-time mom. Her work and poems have been published in periodicals overseas and writes extensively for women and children.
